Celibacy

Everything about celibacy in The Quran

Everything about celibacy in The Quran

The Islamic approach toward sexual abstinence is enormously different to the Islamic view of celibacy.

Sexual intercourse outside of marriage is forbidden in Islam. Abstinence from sexual intercourse is practiced at certain times, such as, during a woman’s menstruation, during days when fasting is observed, and also during the time of Hajj, to maintain purity whilst performing the pilgrimage.

Celibacy as an act of religious devotion, however, is not recognised and strongly discouraged. The Prophet Muhammad condemned celibacy and was himself a firm believer in the value of marriage and the formation of families.

Marriage is strongly encouraged for everyone and lifelong celibacy is forbidden. The Quran reaffirms that early prophets married and formed families and saw the purpose of marriage and procreation which began with the very first man Adam, of whom we draw inspiration for many things. The Quran also maintains that Allah did not ordain a life of celibacy on mankind and reveals that the undertaking of celibacy is an ill-fated invention of man and the monastic life created by monks.

“Then We sent following their footsteps Our messengers and followed with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. And we placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them (they did so) seeking the approval of Allah”.

(Quran 57:27)
