Everything about happiness in The Quran
The Islamic concept of happiness is expressed in a number of ways.
Quranic verses that enlighten the reader on the significance of happiness within Islam describe it as a conscious state of mind, and also as a lifestyle choice that focuses on living ‘a good life’.
“Whosoever does right, whether male or female, and is a believer we shall make them live a good life, and we will surely give them their reward according to the best of what they used to do”. (Quran 16:97)
The ‘good life’, as it is called, may be fulfilled through having faith and performing good deeds, even in the face of struggle, tribulation, and distress.
Happiness is achieved through the negation of doubt, discontent, misery, and corruption. Other expressions of happiness are manifested as worshipping Allah, honouring Allah, having a love for Islam, and believing in the fundamental teachings of Islam.
These are worded in the Koranic text as having an ‘openness of the heart’, and ‘contentment of the heart’.
“Those whom Allah wills to guide, He opens their breast to Islam; those whom He wills to leave straying, He makes their breast close and constricted”. (Quran 6:125)
“For without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find contentment”. (Quran 13:28).
A life of peaceful contentment and openness of the heart are characteristics of happiness that are achieved through building a strong relationship with Allah, upholding the remembrance of Allah, and following the true guidance of Islam.
Total happiness can be achieved through the proper devotion and worship of Allah, salvation from Hell, and admission to Paradise in the Hereafter.
“Allah has placed ease and happiness in certainty of faith and contentment. He has placed worry and misery in discontent and doubt”. (Hadith – Ibn Mas‘ud)
