What does The Quran say about the soul
The human soul is the divine and mysterious creation of Allah.
A soul is assigned into every human body when it is merely a foetus and remains inside the human bod throughout its life on earth.
At the point of death, the soul departs from the body to dwell in the heavens.
The Quran provides little information on the human soul and informs mankind that the mysteries of the soul are divine and should therefore remain so. Due to this Quranic declaration most Muslim scholars consider any probing discussion regarding the soul as ‘taboo’, and a direct result of this perspective has seen the possibility of further theoretical explorations remain very limited within scholastic circles.
The Arabic words word ‘Ruh’ and ‘Nafs’ are used in the Quran to describe the soul at different ‘periods’ or ‘life-spans’. Scripture describes ‘Ruh’ as the gentle spirit without a body which resides in the heavens and requires a physical body to contain it here on earth, and the word ‘Nafs’ is used to imply the meaning of a soul that occupies a body.
“They ask you, (O Muhammad), about the soul. Say, ‘The soul is of the affair of my lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little”.
(Quran 17:85)
