Population of hell

Jahannam is the Kingdom of Hell in Islam and is described with meticulous, insightful and otherworldly detail.

Furthermore, the different gates of hell are numbered as seven and identified in the Quran as:

Jaheem (the blazing fire).

Al-Nar (the fire).

Haawiyah (the abyss).

Hatamah (that which breaks to pieces).

Ladthaa.

Sa’eer.

Saqar (the blaze).

There are no accounts relating to the population of Hell in the Quran in terms of numbers.

There is however a large body of Quranic readers who believe that there is an account relating to the gender ratio of the kingdom of Hell evidenced in the Quran and reinforced by hadith.

These Muslims belief that the population of Hell will have a greater number of women than men and those who follow this line of thought look to a single passage in the Holy Quran and several verses of hadith.    

“(And it is said unto the angels) assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship instead of Allah, and lead them to the path of hell” (Quran 37:23)

It is recorded in hadith with greater clarity that women will shape the majority of people who inhabit Hell. Narrated from Imran Ibn Husayn it is recorded that;

“I looked into Paradise and I saw that the majority of its people were the poor. And I looked into hell and saw that the majority of its people were women”.
