Rape

Everything about rape in The Quran

Everything about rape in The Quran

All sexual relations outside of marriage are prohibited.

The act of rape, by those standards, is a crime.

Yet the topic of rape is almost non-existent in the sacred writings. There is no equivalent term for rape that appears in the Quran. Within matrimony the act of rape is woefully unclear because the husband is allowed unlimited sexual access to his wife or wives.

“Your wives are as a tilth unto you; so approach your tilth when or how ye will”.

 (Quran 2:223)

In the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, there is no ban against marital rape, or statutory rape, and there is no pre-set law criminalizing rape, with an established and recommended sentence for rape.

If the rape victim met the rapist in violation of ‘purdah’ (the Muslim practice of female seclusion from men), then the victim can be punished by the court as well.

The general punishment is;

stoning (for married offenders).

100 lashes with a whip and exile from the community for 1 year (for unmarried offenders).

Paying a fine or ‘Mahr’ to the victim.

The Prophet Muhammad, after successful battles, possessed and traded in captive slaves. Sex with captive women and married captive slaves was permitted by Prophet Muhammad at the time. The controversy surrounding the topic of rape reaches its zenith when certain Quranic verses are cited.

“O Prophet! We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their dowers; and those (slaves) whom your right hand possesses”. (Quran 33:50)

There are several references to captive women whom the ‘right hand possesses’ in the Quran (4 in total).

Critics believe these statements, coupled with the absence of a direct condemnation of rape, adds to the low ranking status of the crime in Islamic law.
