Everything about suicide in The Quran
Quranic scripture forbids suicide and affirms that life is given to each person for a purpose and we are to lead peaceful lives in the fulfilment of that purpose.
Only Allah knows when a new life will be born and when that life will end, and also when a person’s true purpose has been fulfilled.
Life is a treasured gift from Allah and human beings are obligated to care for, protect and nurture life. We are not free to decide when our life’s purpose is fulfilled or when it is time for us to die, this is only known to Allah. If a person chooses to end their own life, they are performing a function that belongs only to God.
“And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allah is most merciful to you” (Quran 4:29)
“And do not throw yourselves into destruction” (Quran 2:195)
The Quran values human life and makes it clear that life is sacred and it must not be taken without the highest justification. Overwhelming sadness, worldly difficulties and often despair are identified as factors that can drive a person to consider taking their own life, however readers of the Quran are taught that Allah does not leave his sincere believers on their own and to form a closer relationship with Allah (through prayer). Muslims are urged and encouraged to persevere and to never lose control or their faith.
* A major ongoing debate by some Muslims is the belief in Martyrdom over suicide; this highly controversial issue stems from the stance that Islam is against suicide but not against martyrdom.
