Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, largely achieved during the first 28 weeks, before the embryo or foetus is capable of independent life.

This clinically induced and planned abortion differs from the unplanned abortion otherwise known as a miscarriage or stillbirth.

The Bible chapters and verse do not address the issue of abortion precisely. What is made abundantly clear however, through numerous statements and instructions, is God’s observation of the human foetus in development. Readers of the Bible are told that: God knows us before our creation in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5).God has an active part in foetal development (Psalm 139:13-16).

The penalty for someone who causes the death of a baby in the womb is the same as the same as murder (Exodus 21:22-25). The matter of abortion is not about the liberty to perform planned abortions, or the inconvenience, bad timing, or birth control. It is about the matter of life or death for the unborn baby.

95% of abortions performed today involve women who do not desire to have a baby. Less than 5% of abortions are for the unfortunate victims of rape, incest, and pregnancy complications.

In the cases of rape and incest, mothers are urged not to end the life of the innocent baby and instead, adoption of the baby to a loving family unable to bear children of their own is endorsed.

With complicated pregnancies that endanger the mother’s health, the difficult decision is ultimately resolved between the couple.
