Everything about the end of earth in The Bible

Everything about the end of earth in The Bible

The final and only book of the Bible noted for its apocalyptic content, predictions of future events, and reports of prophetic happenings, is the book of Revelation.

Its passages merge (or collide) the kingdom of Heaven, and of Hell, with our world in the final battle between good and evil. The sweeping themes are of judgement, salvation, and the return of the Messiah.

The cryptic narrative of ‘Revelation’ makes it a great source for debate among academics that endeavour to interpret its message. The End Times may refer to the end of a period in time, or an end to the age-old bond we have with God, or indeed a literal prediction of the future.

The writings are part of the three main Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), and appear in many other faiths as well, under the well-known ‘doomsday’ scenarios. Popular art and literature interpretations refer to this great event as the ‘End of Days’.

In Christianity, the end times often portray a period of great tribulation on earth during the time where those left behind (after the rapture) will begin to suffer hardships, indiscriminate natural disasters, famine, distress, and wars on an extraordinary scale. Following this period will be the second coming of Christ (the Lamb of God), who will usher in the fullness of the kingdom of God and bring an end to the suffering and evil. After the age of peace, there is a second brief period of difficulty which results in the everlasting removal of the wicked. After which a new heaven and a new earth will replace the old realms and the people of God will journey to the presence of God, and of Christ, in a new heavenly city. Revelation identifies the Beast allied with the number 666; the false prophet, the great harlot Babylon, and the four horsemen of the apocalypse (invasion, warfare, famine, and death), with Satan branded the ‘great dragon’. Ultimately the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet, are thrown into a lake of fire.

Catholicism mainly adheres to the non-literal realization of this forecast; ‘Of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven…but the Father only’. Tradition holds that these events will come to us like a ‘thief in the night’. (1 Thessalonians 5: 2)
